In a traditional swap marketplace, two people need to want exactly what the other has. That's a tough ask. Swapster's chain swapping system changes that — linking three or more people together so that everyone gets what they want, even if no single pair is a perfect match.

The idea is simple: instead of finding one person who has what you want and wants what you have, the system finds a loop where each person receives from one neighbour and sends to another. Everyone moves forward; nobody is left out.

A real example

You have green shoes you no longer want, and you'd love some blue shoes. Faye is offering blue shoes but wants red shoes in return. On their own, you and Faye are no match.

Then Amber appears — she has red shoes and wants green shoes. Still no direct matches between any two people. But as a chain of three?

  • You receive blue shoes from Faye.
  • Faye receives red shoes from Amber.
  • Amber receives green shoes from you.

Everyone successfully swaps. ✓

...and send your green shoes on to Amber.

Why chains work so much better

A direct swap has a very strict requirement: two people must want exactly what the other has. The more specific your items, the harder that is to satisfy.

A chain relaxes that requirement entirely. Each person only needs one condition met: someone in the network wants what they're offering. The system handles the rest — finding the loop that satisfies everyone simultaneously.

This isn't a new idea.

The same principle powers kidney exchange chains used in transplant medicine — where patients who can't find a direct donor are matched across chains of willing donors, saving lives that a one-to-one system would miss entirely. More connections really do mean more successful outcomes.

"Open to offers" — the loosest link in the chain

Sometimes you've got something to give away but no specific item in mind to receive. Pick Open to offers when you post and you skip the "what I want" step entirely — the system slots you into whatever chain closes around your item.

Imagine the shoe example again, but this time you don't care what you get — you just want the green shoes gone. Faye wants red shoes and is offering blue shoes. Amber has red shoes and wants green shoes. With you "Open to offers", the chain still closes — and you get whichever item completes the loop (in this case, the blue shoes from Faye). You see exactly what's being offered before you accept; nothing is forced on you.

When is this useful?

  • You're decluttering and would happily take "anything reasonable" in return.
  • You're new to swapping and haven't decided yet what you'd like — let the matches inspire you.
  • Your item is very swappable — making yourself the loose link in any chain dramatically increases the odds of closing one.

You can still decline a match if the offered item doesn't appeal — your "Open to offers" listing stays open and keeps looking for the next chain.

Direct matching vs chain matching

That's genuinely useful, but it only solves the two-party case: if you and the other person don't want each other's item, the match fails.

Swapster's matching algorithm goes a step further with chain resolution: when no direct match exists, it finds a loop across three or more people so a trade can still close.
